How do I select the right marine pump?

You need fluid, required real flow, head, hose length and diameter, voltage, control method and expected duty cycle. Maximum-flow rating alone is not enough.

What should an automatic bilge system include?

Alongside a correctly sized pump, inlet position, float switch or automation, fuse, cables, manual override, permitted non-return elements, discharge and where needed a high-water alarm matter.

Can an old pump be replaced by one with the same connection?

The connection is only one data point. Check voltage, current, fuse, flow at actual head, mounting, fluid, dimensions and control.
